Habitat and Location:

Emblemantha urnulata, a varied undershrub from Sumatra’s Jambi Province and Riau Province. The holotype was collected in deep shade along a stream.

Description and Key Features:

Emblemantha urnulata has a habit like its closest relative Ardisia. The patterning on the leaves varies in colour and venation. The leaves measure 7-13.5 cm long and 4-7 cm wide. There are 7-9 major veins on the leaf which are a different colour. The inflorescence measures 4-6 cm long and bears flowers like a Vaccinium (Ericaceae). The overall height of the shrub is not recorded.

Care Instructions:

Grow Emblemantha urnulata in a pot with a tropical terrestrial media. Ensure sufficient air movement, especially in humidity above 50%. Provide low light for optimum growth and flowers. Do not let the media dry. Maintain an intermediate or warm greenhouse/terrarium with night temperatures of 17-24 degrees and daytime temperatures of 24-31 degrees. Suitable for indoor growth as a houseplant. We have seen this species offered as a terrarium plant in the past but we adevise with caution as it is not known how big these shrubs get.
