Habitat:

Goeppertia zebrina is native to the Atlantic rainforest of southeastern Brazil, where it occurs in the understorey of humid tropical forests, particularly in Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo states. It grows in deep shade beneath dense forest canopy, rooted in rich, humus-laden soils, often on forested slopes or along shaded streambanks. The plant thrives in warm, wet environments with constant high humidity, generally from sea level to around 800 metres elevation.

Description:

Goeppertia zebrina is an evergreen, clump-forming herbaceous perennial, reaching heights of 60–90 cm. It has long, upright, pale green petioles that support broadly elliptic to oblong leaves, typically 30–45 cm long and 10–15 cm wide. The upper leaf surface is vividly marked with alternating velvety dark green and light green stripes, resembling zebra markings, while the underside is a lighter green. The leaves are slightly undulate at the margins and held nearly horizontal. The inflorescence is a short, basal spike bearing small, tubular, pale purple to whitish flowers, though these are seldom produced in cultivation. The plant is grown primarily for its striking ornamental foliage.

Cultivation:

Goeppertia zebrina prefers moderate, filtered light and high humidity. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 20–26°C, with nighttime lows of 16–18°C. It requires consistent humidity above 60%. Grow in a light, free-draining mix containing peat, perlite, and fine bark or leaf mould, maintaining a slightly acidic pH of 5.5–6.5. Keep the substrate evenly moist using soft or rainwater; avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely or become waterlogged. Mist foliage regularly in dry indoor conditions or use a humidity tray. Feed monthly during active growth with a dilute, balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, cold drafts, or fluoridated water.
