Habitat and Ecology

Gomesa imperatoris-maximiliani (formerly known as Oncidium crispum) is a striking pseudobulbous epiphyte endemic to Eastern and Southern Brazil (including the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo). It is found growing on trees in both open montane forests and coastal regions at altitudes of 50 to 1,200 metres. This orchid is highly adaptable, tolerating both cool/moist and warm/drier conditions, but thrives with bright light and excellent air circulation in a climate that provides distinct seasonal variations in rainfall.

Description

This orchid is a small to medium-sized perennial that forms dense clumps. It produces large, ovoid, and strongly flattened (compressed) pseudobulbs that become deeply grooved (sulcate) with age. Each pseudobulb typically carries two to three apical, leathery, oblong-lanceolate leaves. The magnificent flowers are borne on an erect or arching spike that can hold numerous blooms. The flowers are medium-sized (5-7.5 cm across) and famous for their wavy or curled (crisped) sepals and petals, often referred to by the common name 'Curled Oncidium'. The colour is typically a stunning combination of tawny brown, reddish-brown, or chestnut with yellow margins and highlights. The lip (labellum) is similarly coloured and may be fimbriate (fringed). The name honours Emperor Maximilian of Mexico.

Cultivation

Gomesa imperatoris-maximiliani is an intermediate to cool-growing orchid that is considered relatively easy to grow. It requires bright, filtered light and can tolerate some direct winter sun, but needs protection from intense midday sun in summer. Use a medium-grade, open orchid mix of bark, perlite, and a minimal amount of synthetic peat or coir. Water regularly during the active growing period (spring to autumn), allowing the medium to dry almost completely between waterings. It benefits from a slight cool and dry rest period in winter to encourage prolific blooming. Moderate to high humidity (60-80%) is preferred, along with good air movement.

Optimal Daytime Temperature: 20-25 C (68-77 F)

Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A cooling period is beneficial, ideally 12-18 C (54-64 F).

Feed weekly during the growing season with a balanced liquid orchid fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Unique Features

This is a spectacular orchid prized for its large, dramatically curled or crimped flowers and its vibrant, highly patterned colouration (often referred to as 'chita' in Portuguese). Its vigorous growth and reliability as a summer-blooming specimen make it a must-have for any orchid collector.
