Habitat:
Hoya golamcoana is endemic to Palawan in the Philippines, where it grows in lowland tropical forests at elevations between 300 and 800 metres. It is typically found climbing along tree trunks or hanging from branches in shaded to partially sunlit areas. The species prefers humid forest margins and edges with good airflow, where moisture levels remain high and temperatures are stable year-round. Its natural habitat experiences seasonal rainfall and filtered light beneath the forest canopy.
Description:
Hoya golamcoana is a fast-growing epiphytic or semi-terrestrial climber with long, twining vines that can reach over 1 metre in length. The leaves are opposite, succulent, and ovate to elliptic, measuring 5–9 cm long and 3–5 cm wide. They are deep green, smooth, and often display a subtle sheen when mature. Its inflorescences are umbellate, bearing 15–25 star-shaped flowers. Each flower is approximately 1–1.5 cm in diameter, with a pale cream to white corolla and a pink to reddish corona. Flowers are slightly fuzzy, reflexed, and emit a light, pleasant fragrance. The blooming period occurs multiple times throughout the warm season under suitable conditions. It is similar to Hoya pubicalyx but is distinguishable by its more compact inflorescence and smaller, glossier leaves.
Cultivation:
Hoya golamcoana grows well in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some morning or late afternoon sun. It prefers daytime temperatures between 22°C and 28°C and nighttime temperatures no lower than 15°C. High humidity between 60% and 85% is ideal, with good airflow to prevent rot. Soil should be airy and well-draining, such as a mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat. Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Water when the top few centimetres of the potting medium dry out, ensuring the roots are never left soggy. Reduce watering in cooler months. Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Provide support for climbing growth and avoid root disturbance when repotting.
