Habitat:
Kohleria amabilis var. bogotensis is native to Colombia, where it is found in the montane regions surrounding Bogotá. This variety typically grows in humid forests at elevations between 1000 and 2000 metres, thriving in partially shaded conditions along forest edges and understory environments. It can be found growing terrestrially or epiphytically on mossy trees, benefiting from consistent moisture and well-drained conditions.
Description:
Kohleria amabilis var. bogotensis is a herbaceous, rhizomatous plant with upright to slightly arching stems reaching 30–60 cm in height. The leaves are opposite, ovate to elliptic, and velvety, measuring 6–12 cm long and 3–5 cm wide. The foliage is dark green with purplish undersides and prominent veining, giving the plant an attractive appearance even when not in bloom. Inflorescences arise from the upper leaf nodes, bearing tubular flowers that are 3–5 cm long. The flowers are typically pink to reddish-purple with spotted or mottled throats, sometimes displaying lighter margins. This variety can be distinguished from the typical Kohleria amabilis by its slightly smaller stature and more intense flower colouration. Blooming occurs throughout the year under favourable conditions, with peaks during the warmer months.
Cultivation:
Kohleria amabilis var. bogotensis prefers warm to intermediate conditions, with daytime temperatures between 20°C and 26°C and nighttime temperatures of 15°C to 18°C. It thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity (60–80%) while benefiting from good air circulation. Grow in a well-draining potting mix composed of peat, perlite, and fine bark or use a mix suitable for other Gesneriads. The ideal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (5.5–6.5). Water regularly during active growth using rainwater or distilled water, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months or when the plant enters dormancy. Fertilise every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser to encourage flowering and healthy growth.
