Habitat and Ecology

Laelia colombiana (also known by the synonym Schomburgkia wallisii) is a striking, large-sized pseudobulbous epiphyte native to Colombia and Northern Ecuador. It grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. This orchid is found in mountain habitats, often growing in the branches or on the trunks of living trees.

Description and Distinguishing Features

This is a large-sized perennial orchid renowned for its impressive flowers.

Pseudobulbs & Foliage: The plant has fusiform (spindle-shaped) pseudobulbs (about 6-30 cm long), which become rugose (wrinkled) with age and are clearly separated. Each pseudobulb typically carries two coriaceous (leathery), oblong-elliptic leaves.

Flowers: Blooms are produced on a terminal, racemose inflorescence that can be long (up to 40 cm) and carry several to many flowers (typically 6 to 12 blooms).

Aesthetics: The flowers are about 3.75 cm (1.5 inches) across and are typically pink with orange-brown petals. They usually arise in the spring from a mature pseudobulb.

💧 Cultivation and Care

Laelia colombiana is a cool-to-warm growing epiphyte that is considered relatively easy to cultivate.

Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Mimic the lighting used for Cattleya, avoiding direct sun.

Substrate: The mix should be coarse, well-draining, and allow for good air movement. It does well in a well-draining potting mix or mounted to tree fern or cork slabs.

Watering: Water regularly but only when the mix is dry before watering again. Plants in active growth require more water than those at rest.

Temperature: Prefers moderate to warm temperatures with a necessary night drop to stimulate flowering.

Optimal Daytime Temperature: Around 21-25 C (70-77 F).

Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A drop of 6-8 C (43-46 F) is ideal to stimulate blooming.

Humidity: The ideal humidity range is 50 to 80%.

✨ Unique Features

This orchid is a favourite among collectors for its impressive sprays of showy blossoms and its ornamental value. The vigorous growth and production of many flowers on long spikes make a mature specimen an elegant display. Rare, highly prized 'Alba' varieties are also known.
