Habitat and Ecology
Macleania stricta is an epiphytic or terrestrial shrub belonging to the Ericaceae (Andean blueberry) family. It is native to the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador, found across a wide altitudinal range, from tropical moist forests at 350 metres up to montane wet and rainforests at 2,720 metres. This wide distribution means it adapts to cool-to-intermediate growing conditions. It grows on tree trunks (epiphytic) or steep embankments, thriving in acidic, humus-rich soil with high moisture levels and good air circulation.
Description
The plant is a woody shrub that typically forms a compact to arching habit. The species name stricta means 'erect' or 'straight,' referring to its growth tendency compared to rambling relatives. The leaves are small (4-8 cm long), thickly coriaceous (leathery), and ovate to elliptic-ovate in shape, with a rounded base and a pointed tip. New foliage often emerges with a red flush before maturing to green. The conspicuous flowers are borne in small clusters (subfasciculate inflorescences) in the leaf axils. The blooms are elongate-tubular and waxy, typically displaying vibrant red, scarlet, or reddish-orange colouration, often with a slight yellow or white contrast at the mouth. These flowers are designed for hummingbird pollination. The fruit is a small, edible berry.
Cultivation
Macleania stricta is an intermediate to cool-growing shrub that requires controlled conditions, ideally a conservatory or cool greenhouse in the UK. It needs bright, filtered light and should be shaded from intense, direct sun. The substrate must be acidic (pH 5.5-6.5) and highly free-draining to prevent root rot. Use an ericaceous mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of synthetic peat or well-rotted leaf mould. The plant requires consistent moisture; allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings, but the core medium should remain damp.
Optimal Daytime Temperature: 18-24 C (64-75 F)
Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A cooling period is essential, ideally 12-16 C (54-61 F).
High humidity (60-80%) is necessary. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, highly dilute ericaceous liquid fertiliser.
Unique Features
This member of the tropical blueberry genus is prized for its compact growth habit and its profuse clusters of waxy, red, tubular flowers that contrast beautifully with its glossy, leathery foliage. Its ability to tolerate the cool nights of its montane habitat makes it one of the more rewarding Macleania species for the intermediate cool-house collector. The new growth flushing intense red adds vibrant interest outside of the flowering season.
