Habitat and Ecology
Maxillaria striata is a large, pseudobulbous epiphyte native to the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It is found in very wet montane cloud forests at elevations typically between 700 and 2,200 metres. This orchid thrives in a cool, wet, and highly humid environment, often growing on steep, mossy embankments and large tree trunks. Its habitat provides consistent moisture from mist and rainfall, necessitating a free-draining substrate to prevent root rot.
Description
Commonly known as the Striped Maxillaria, this orchid is one of the largest-flowered species in the genus. It forms dense clumps of oblong-cylindrical, flattened pseudobulbs (up to 8 cm long) clustered along a rhizome. Each pseudobulb carries a single, apical, long, leathery leaf (up to 30 cm). The solitary flowers are large and pendulous (up to 7 cm wide), emerging on short stems from the base of the pseudobulbs, primarily blooming in summer and autumn. The sepals and petals are yellow or greenish-yellow and are prominently adorned with dark red or purplish-brown stripes running lengthwise—the feature referenced by its species name, striata (striped). The lip is typically white or pale, with striking purple radial stripes and a recurved, sub-crenulate margin. The flowers are generally fragrant and long-lasting.
Cultivation
Maxillaria striata is an intermediate to cool-growing orchid that requires constant high humidity and should be grown in a cool conservatory or humid greenhouse in the UK. It needs bright, filtered light, avoiding direct, harsh midday sun. Use an open, free-draining, medium-grade epiphytic mix of bark, charcoal, and perlite. The substrate must be kept evenly moist at all times; never allow it to become bone dry, as the pseudobulbs can quickly shrivel.
Optimal Daytime Temperature: 18-23 C (64-73 F)
Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A cooling period is essential, ideally 12-16 C (54-61 F).
Very high humidity (80%+) is preferred, alongside excellent air movement to prevent disease. Feed regularly during the active growth period with a balanced, dilute liquid orchid feed.
Unique Features
This Maxillaria species is a spectacular collector's orchid, famed for its large size and its unique, intricate striped colour pattern. The dense vertical striping on the yellow sepals and petals gives the flower a dramatic, caged or flame-like appearance. Its impressive bloom size and strong fragrance make it a highly desirable and rewarding specimen for the enthusiast.
