Habitat:
Philodendron tortum is native to northern Brazil, particularly in the states of Amazonas and Pará, where it grows in lowland tropical rainforest. It typically inhabits non-inundated terra firme forest at elevations between 100 and 300 metres. It is a hemiepiphytic climber, found scrambling up trees in the shaded understory, where humidity remains high year-round and light is dappled or filtered through the canopy.
Description:
Philodendron tortum is a distinctive and sought-after aroid recognised for its deeply pinnatifid, almost skeletal foliage. It is a climbing hemiepiphyte, with elongated internodes and aerial roots that attach to bark or grow into moss. Mature leaves are narrow, deeply divided, and can reach 40–70 cm long and 25–40 cm wide when fully developed. Each leaf blade has numerous slender, finger-like lobes, giving it a spider-like appearance. The petioles are cylindrical, often slightly flattened towards the base, and measure up to 60 cm long. Leaf colour is bright green to yellow-green, with a leathery texture. Inflorescences are rare in cultivation but consist of a white to pale green spathe about 10–15 cm long, enclosing a pale spadix. The spathe is not prominently flared.
Cultivation:
Grow Philodendron tortum in bright, indirect light with strong humidity and good airflow. Daytime temperatures should range between 22–28 °C, with nighttime lows of 16–18 °C. It thrives in high humidity (above 70%) and benefits from a climbing support or moss pole. Use a well-draining, airy mix rich in organic matter—such as orchid bark, perlite, coir, and composted leaf litter. Maintain a slightly acidic pH (5.8–6.5) and water when the top third of the soil begins to dry. Fertilise monthly during the growing season with a dilute balanced fertiliser. Avoid overwatering, as the species is prone to root rot in compact soils.
