Habitat
While the species Phygelius capensis is native to South Africa, the cultivar
'Devil's Tears' is a cultivar. As such, it does not have a native habitat but is cultivated widely in gardens. It performs best in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade.
Description
Phygelius capensis 'Devil's Tears' is a vigorous, semi-evergreen shrub, often grown as a herbaceous perennial in colder climates. It has a suckering habit and forms a bushy clump. The foliage is ovate, dark green, and held on upright stems. From mid-summer to autumn, it produces large terminal clusters of pendent, tubular, deep red to pink flowers with bright yellow throats, which are highly attractive to hummingbirds.
Cultivation
This plant thrives in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some light shade. While it is somewhat drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from consistent moisture, but avoid waterlogged conditions. In colder climates, it's advisable to protect the root crown with a dry mulch in winter. Pruning should be done in early spring to remove old growth and encourage new shoots. Fertilise lightly during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser.
