Habitat and Location

Plectranthus ciliatus, commonly known as the Creeping Spur Flower, is native to the subtropical and tropical regions of southern Africa, particularly found in South Africa and Eswatini (Swaziland). This plant thrives in shaded forest understories, along riverbanks, and in moist, well-draining soils. It naturally grows as a ground cover in humid environments with filtered light.

Description

:

Plectranthus ciliatus is a fast-growing, trailing perennial with lush, velvety foliage and striking flowers. Plants trail or spread up to 30-60 cm in length. Its ovate leaves are dark green with a purplish underside, highlighted by scalloped edges and a soft, fuzzy texture. During its blooming season, the plant produces delicate, tubular flowers in shades of pale violet, arranged in upright spikes that attract pollinators such as bees.

This species is an excellent choice for use as a ground cover in shaded areas, hanging baskets, or as a trailing plant in containers.

Care Instructions

Plectranthus ciliatus thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade. It prefers well-draining, fertile soil and consistent moisture, though it is somewhat drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

Maintain daytime temperatures between 18-30°C, and nighttime temperatures of 10-16°C , avoiding exposure to frost if grown outdoors. This plant benefits from moderate humidity levels, making it well-suited for indoor environments. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertilizer to support lush growth and flowering. Prune as needed to maintain a neat appearance and encourage bushier growth.
