Podochilus serpyllifolius
Habitat: Podochilus serpyllifolius is an epiphytic orchid native to Western Malesia, encompassing regions such as Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and the Lesser Sunda Islands. It thrives in wet tropical biomes, often found growing on tree trunks in mixed dipterocarp forests and on mossy rocks or small trees in lower montane forests at elevations ranging from 700 to 1,800 meters.
Description: Commonly known as the Thyme-leaved Podochilus, Podochilus serpyllifolius is a delicate, moss-like orchid. Its slender stems are adorned with small, alternate leaves that sheath the stem. The plant produces inconspicuous, resupinate flowers that range in color from white to green, often exhibiting purple striations. The lip of the flower may be entire or trilobed, and the short, upward-curving column features erect anthers with acuminate tips.
Cultivation: To successfully cultivate Podochilus serpyllifolius, replicate its natural humid, tropical environment. Provide indirect light to moderate shade and maintain high humidity levels, ideally between 60% and 80%. Use a well-draining epiphytic orchid mix, such as bark combined with sphagnum moss. Water regularly to keep the medium moist but not waterlogged, allowing for slight drying between waterings. Maintain daytime intermediate temperatures between 23°C to 30°C, with cooler conditions at night to mimic its montane habitat.
Propagation: Propagation is typically achieved through division. Carefully separate the plant into sections, ensuring each division has a portion of the rhizome and 3+healthy stems. Replant the divisions in suitable fine bark orchid media with chopped moss added and provide appropriate care to encourage establishment and growth. Plants grow well in live moss.
