Habitat:
Pseuderanthemum maculatum is native to lowland tropical forests of the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. This species has become naturalised in other countries.. It grows in humid, shaded environments along forest margins, clearings, and disturbed sites at elevations from sea level to around 600 metres. Often found growing in semi-shaded understories or in partially open areas with rich, moist soil, it forms part of the herbaceous layer and is commonly associated with secondary forest vegetation.
Description:
Pseuderanthemum maculatum is a low-growing, bushy subshrub reaching up to 60 cm tall, valued for its colourful foliage. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, 5–15 cm long, and marked with irregular cream to pale yellow spots or blotches against a dark green or purplish background. The stems are soft and green to reddish, becoming slightly woody with age. Flowers are borne in short terminal racemes and are small, tubular, and typically pale violet to lavender with darker markings, about 1–1.5 cm in length. Although the flowers are attractive, the plant is primarily cultivated for its striking ornamental foliage.
Cultivation:
Pseuderanthemum maculatum thrives in warm, tropical conditions with daytime temperatures between 22°C and 28°C and nighttime temperatures of 16°C to 20°C. It prefers high humidity (above 70%) and filtered light or partial shade. The species does best in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0) that is rich in organic matter and drains well. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, watering with rainwater or distilled water. It responds well to regular light pruning to maintain shape and promote bushier growth. Fertilise every two to three weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
