Habitat:

Rhipsalis cereuscula is a widespread epiphytic cactus native to tropical and subtropical forests of Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina. It typically inhabits lowland to montane rainforests at elevations between 200 and 1,200 metres, growing in shaded, humid environments. This species is found on tree trunks, branches, and occasionally on rocks (lithophytically), where it benefits from the diffused light and high moisture levels of the forest canopy.

Description:

Rhipsalis cereuscula is a pendulous, clump-forming cactus with slender, cylindrical stems that form dense, trailing masses. Primary stems are upright or arching, to around 10–25 cm long and 2–5 mm thick, with numerous fine, pencil-like branchlets that resemble green coral. Mature clumps can reach over 50 cm in length, forming elegant, cascading displays. Unlike desert cacti, this species lacks spines and is adapted to humid forest conditions. Small, creamy-white flowers, around 4–6 mm across, appear singly or in small clusters near the tips of the branches, often in late winter to spring. The flowers are followed by translucent white to pinkish berries, each about 5 mm in diameter. It is similar in appearance to Rhipsalis baccifera, but differs in its denser, finer branching and overall more compact habit.

Cultivation:

Rhipsalis cereuscula grows best in bright, indirect light or dappled shade and must be protected from direct sun, which can cause yellowing or burn the stems. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 26°C, with nighttime temperatures no lower than 12°C. Humidity should be maintained between 50% and 80%, especially in heated or dry environments. It prefers a loose, free-draining epiphytic mix such as fine bark, coconut husk, and perlite, or a peat-based cactus compost. Soil pH should be mildly acidic to neutral, between 5.5 and 6.8. Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce watering in winter. Use a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks during active growth. Ensure good ventilation to prevent fungal issues and root rot.
