Habitat and Location:

Ruellia makoyana is native to the warm, tropical regions of Brazil. This species is typically found in the understories of rainforests, where it thrives in shaded, humid conditions. It naturally grows in well-draining soils rich in organic material, often in areas with filtered sunlight beneath the forest canopy.

Description:

Ruellia makoyana is a striking evergreen perennial characterized by its trailing habit and velvety, deep green leaves with bold silvery-white veins. The underside of the leaves is tinged with a reddish-purple hue, adding to its ornamental appeal. During the blooming season, the plant produces trumpet-shaped, vibrant magenta-pink flowers with delicate, flaring petals, creating a dramatic contrast against its lush foliage.

Due to its trailing growth, Ruellia makoyana is an excellent choice for hanging baskets, cascading displays, or as an annual ground cover in shaded UK gardens. Its compact size and unique appearance also make it a popular plant suitable for paludarium/terrarium, greenhouses, conservatories, and indoors

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, Ruellia makoyana should be placed in semi-bright, indirect light or partial shade. While it tolerates lower light conditions, ample filtered sunlight will encourage better flowering. Plant it in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter to mimic its natural habitat. Water regularly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce watering during cooler months. Avoid overwatering, as the plant is sensitive to root rot.

Maintain temperatures between 18-26°C, as this plant prefers warmth and does not tolerate frost. Provide moderate to high humidity levels, especially indoors, by misting the plant or placing it near a humidity tray. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowers. Prune back leggy growth to maintain a bushy, compact shape.
