Habitat and Location:
Selaginella uncinata, commonly known as peacock moss or blue spike moss, is native to southern China and Vietnam. It thrives in shaded, moist environments such as primary or old secondary forests, hill slopes, river margins, and swamps. This species prefers high humidity and indirect light, making it well-suited for terrariums and shaded garden areas.
Description:
Selaginella uncinata is a low-growing, spreading perennial that forms a dense mat of finely divided, moss-like foliage. The leaves exhibit a striking metallic blue-green hue, with iridescent shades that can vary with intensity depending on light exposure. Individual leaves are small, typically around 3 mm in length, and arranged in a closely overlapping pattern along the stems. The plant's trailing stems root at the nodes, allowing it to cover ground effectively. While primarily grown for its attractive foliage, Selaginella uncinata produces compact, ovate-triangular strobili (spore-bearing structures) at the tips of branches, measuring 5–25 mm long and 2.5–4 mm wide.
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Selaginella uncinata successfully, provide a shaded location with indirect light, as direct sunlight can scorch the foliage. Plant it in a well-draining, moisture-retentive substrate rich in organic matter. Maintain consistent soil moisture, ensuring it remains evenly damp but not waterlogged. High humidity levels (ideally between 60–80%) are essential for optimal growth; consider using a humidifier or placing the plant in a terrarium to achieve this. Ideal temperature ranges are between 12–26°C (55–80°F). Propagation is easily accomplished through division or stem cuttings, as the plant roots readily at the nodes. Regular misting can help maintain humidity, but ensure adequate air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Be cautious of slugs, which may pose a problem.
