Habitat:
Vaccinium kachinense is native to China in Yunnans west and in northern Myanmar, where it inhabits high-elevation montane forests in Kachin State. It is typically found at altitudes ranging from 2800 to 3400 metres, growing along forest margins and in thickets on mossy slopes. These habitats are characterised by cool, moist conditions, persistent cloud cover, and acidic, humus-rich soils. The species grows terrestrially or occasionally as a low epiphyte, often in association with other Ericaceae, ferns, and dwarf bamboos in subalpine scrub and evergreen broad-leaved forests.
Description:
Vaccinium kachinense is a compact to medium-sized evergreen shrub reaching heights of 30 to 120 cm. Its stems are woody, ascending, and densely branched. The leaves are elliptic to oblong-ovate, leathery, and measure 2–5 cm long and 1–2.5 cm wide, with entire or minutely serrulate margins and a glossy dark green upper surface. The inflorescences are axillary racemes bearing 1–5 urn-shaped flowers, each 6–8 mm long. Flowers are typically pale pink to white, with fused petals forming a narrow cylindrical corolla. The fruit is a small, globose berry, ripening to bluish-black and approximately 5–6 mm in diameter. This species is closely allied to Vaccinium glaucoalbum but differs in its more compact growth, shorter inflorescences, and narrower corollas.
Cultivation:
Vaccinium kachinense prefers cool, temperate conditions with daytime temperatures of 16°C to 22°C and nighttime temperatures of 8°C to 12°C. It requires high humidity (above 70%) and partial shade, mimicking the diffuse light of high-elevation forests. It thrives in acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5), rich in organic matter, with good drainage and consistent moisture. Water using rainwater or distilled water, ensuring the substrate remains evenly moist without becoming waterlogged. Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with an ericaceous or acid-loving plant fertiliser at half strength.
