Vriesea carinata is a species from Brazil. Plants are found in the South East of the country in the Atlantic rainforest belt the elevation is not recorded. This species forms large colonies as a branch epiphyte and inhabit open forests. Inflorescences measure 15-20 cm, and bear 15-30 bright red bracts with small yellow flowers that measures about 1 cm across. Plants bloom at any time of the year.
This is a flowering size plant and it is growing in a pot. Grow Vriesea carinata on a mount, or in a pot with a chopped moss, perlite, and fine and medium mixed bark media. Give your plant moderate light, plants do look healthier in lower light, never give the plant direct or bright sunlight and give it a lot of water all year. Plants grow well in an intermediate to cool greenhouse, and they appreciate night-time temperatures of 11-17 degrees and day temperatures of 22 to 32 degrees. This species likes a distinct difference between day and night temperature. This species will grow indoors but should not be overwatered or allowed to dehydrate.
