Habitat and Location:

Calliandra surinamensis, is a pretty pink flowered shrub from Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Description and Key Features:

Calliandra surinamensis is reported to have medicinal properties. It’s an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory but it is potentially useful as a treatment for cancer as it kills cancerous cells.  Plants attain heights of 3-5 metres but much less if kept in a pot. This species is also popular as a tropical bonsai species. The pink flowers are short lived, but the plant flowers a lot throughout the year when in the right conditions.

Care Instructions:

Grow Calliandra surinamensis in a pot and use a rich slightly acidic soil with perlite, fine bark and charcoal added. Provide moderate to bright light for best growth and longer flowering periods. Keep plants lightly damp for best growth and never let them dry out. Maintain an intermediate or cool greenhouse/terrarium with night temperatures of 07-22 degrees and daytime temperatures of 20-31 degrees. Suitable for indoor growth with ample light, and consistent but less watering schedules.
